George Bartol Memorial Scholarship Fund---One of Its Kind

The George Bartol Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2004 by his wife and daughters. George was a dedicated solder, father, husband, son and brother who passed away at age 59 after an 18-month battle with brain cancer.

George Bartol was a Vietnam Veteran who served two tours in Vietnam with the 540 TC CO in 1965-1966, A/1/9 CAV 1 CAV in 1968-1969. His military service, like his family, was a point of pride for Bartol, and qualifying children of Vietnam Veterans are strongly encouraged to apply. Flying was Bartol's lifelong dream, and the Army offered him the chance to go to flight school. He accepted, although he knew it meant another tour in Vietnam.

Bartol flew 180 combat missions to complete his second tour of duty in Vietnam and was discharged from the Army in 1970. His military honors included the Bronze Star, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

In April 2003, when he was 58, George Bartol was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and was given a 100 percent service-connected disability by the VA, which recognized his illness had resulted from heavy exposures in Vietnam to Agent Orange and aircraft fuel.

According to his wife and daughters, Bartol was never bitter about the diagnosis. "I've never seen anybody make peace that quickly with anything," Sue Bartol said. "I've never seen anybody handle death with such dignity." He died Oct. 16, 2004, while living in Winter Park, Fla.

Education was always very important to Mr. Bartol. He made many sacrifices to ensure the education of his three daughters. To carry on his memory, this scholarship was established to aid a child who has lost a parent to brain cancer or a child who has a parent battling primary brain cancer. The cancer must have originated in the brain. Children of Vietnam Veterans who have not been awarded VA Chapter 35 benefits are strongly encouraged to apply.
