A marketing instructor at the University of Central Florida challenged her students to improve their sales techniques while raising money for seven different nonprofits; the winning team found innovative paths to fundraising, leading the other teams while supporting their chosen charity – the Tug McGraw Foundation.

February 11, 2008 – Stress and Quality of Life in Brain Cancer Survivors

Dr. Stephen T. Keir of the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University is awarded the Young Investigator Award at the Chicago Supportive Oncology Conference for his enlightening study of stress as it relates to long-term survival in brain cancer.

January 8, 2008 – “Brains Together for a Cure” 5K Walk in Rochester, MN

At the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, an inspired group of nurses, clinicians, and patients joined together for this first celebrated event, bringing national exposure and raising more than $35,000 for the fight against brain tumors.

January 7, 2008 – Work Productivity in Brain Tumor Survivors

As more and more cancer survivors return to work, studies are beginning to document the long-term effects of symptom burden on work productivity. This 2007 study seeks to determine the work limitations of malignant brain tumor survivors.

November 15, 2007 – Team McGraw Completes ING New York City Marathon

The debut appearance of Team McGraw in the ING New York City Marathon 2007 was a huge success, pulling together committed runners from across the country and Canada to raise more than $200,000 in support of the Foundation. Cameras and reporters surrounded our team throughout the weekend, so stay tuned for more exciting coverage of this event.

November 15, 2007 – Tug McGraw Foundation Gala Held in St. Louis

November 14, 2007 – Stress and Long-Term Survivors of Brain Cancer

A recent study conducted at the Tug McGraw Research Center at Duke documents that long-term survivors of brain cancer – (those surviving 18 months or more) – are just as likely to report themselves as stressed as other patients with brain tumors.

October 16, 2007 – Tug McGraw Foundation Announces 2007 Award Recipients

The Tug McGraw Foundation will honor individuals who have made a difference in the fight against brain tumors during “Denim and Diamonds: An Evening with Tim McGraw and Friends” on Friday, November 2 at Grant’s Farm in St. Louis. October 15, 2007 – Runner Serves Up Bartending Benefit

Team McGraw runner Jennifer McDevitt saw friends and supporters raise their glasses in support of the Foundation at a special bartending benefit in her hometown of Palatine, Illinois on August 28, 2007.  Ready to take on the challenge of tending bar, McDevitt raised both the bar and the bucks at this fun and festive event.

October 15, 2007 – Cell Phone Use and Brain Tumors: Urban Myth or Reality?

Everybody seems to be talking on a cell phone today, from your great-grandmother to grade-school kids.  As a result, there has been much debate about whether the use of cell phones (low-energy radiation) causes brain tumors.  This study examines the potential effects of cellular phone use on the risk of brain tumor development.

October 15, 2007 – Characteristics of Brain Tumor-Associated Headache

Some people get headaches frequently; others rarely experience one.  While headaches can be painful, most of the time they are soon gone – and we forget all about them.  However, headaches are among the most common symptoms of brain tumors.

October 15, 2007 – Winner: 2007 Caregiver of the Year

This year’s nominees for the “Caregiver of the Year” award included heartbreaking and inspiring stories of those who demonstrate courage, faith, strength, and a “Ya Gotta Believe” attitude in caring for brain tumor patients. The Tug McGraw Foundation is honored to announce Arlene Roselli as the 2007 Tug McGraw Foundation “Caregiver of the Year.”

October 10, 2007 – First Brain Cancer Vaccine Approved in Switzerland

Northwest Biotherapeutics, a US-based company, has announced that it has won approval for commercial use of the world’s first vaccine against brain cancer in Switzerland.  The Tug McGraw Foundation will continue to follow what promise to be “some of the most watched and anticipated clinical trials ever conducted.”

October 3, 2007 – “Angels Among Us” 5K Sets Record

The 14th Annual “Angels Among Us” 5K run at Duke University brought together members of the brain tumor community – doctors and patients, researchers and caregivers - in a show of teamwork that resulted in the setting of a new fundraising record for the event.

September 8, 2007 –Crossword Puzzles and Training the Brain

Can we train our brains to think faster? Will doing crossword puzzles keep dementia or Alzheimer’s at bay? Scientists at Duke University are looking at just that, conducting pilot studies to determine how cognitive and non-medicinal training methods can improve the quality of life for those patients challenged with brain tumors.

September 6, 2007 – New Trial Cleared for Children with Inoperable Brain Cancer

YM BioSciences USA Inc. has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration to initiate a Phase II trail investigating nimotuzumab in pediatric patients with recurrent diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a form of inoperable, treatment-resistant brain cancer.

July 19, 2007 – DCVax® - Brain Phase II Clinical Trial

A Phase II clinical trial to test the efficacy ofDCVax®-Brain is currently enrolling patients.  Data from two Phase I clinical trials carried out by Dr. Linda Liau at UCLA support the overall safety of DCVax®-Brain and suggest that it may induce an immune response.  Data suggests delayed time to disease recurrence and increased survival, especially in patients with stable disease at entry.

June 19, 2007 – Innovative Clinical Trial Begins for Patients Diagnosed with Primary Glioma

The Tug McGraw Foundation offers this exciting news about a groundbreaking new clinical trial currently underway in conjunction with the National Cancer Institute. June 1, 2007 – TMF and ABC2 Collaborate to Fund Innovative UCSF Research

The Tug McGraw Foundation and Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure have jointly awarded a $145,000 research grant to Dr. Joseph Costello from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) for his work to control brain tumor growth. This grant represents a unique collaboration among two top brain tumor organizations joining forces to fund research that holds the potential to dramatically improve the lives of patients living with brain cancer.

May 18, 2007 – College Center Fielder Is Shining Example of “Ya Gotta Believe”

Matt Lawson is a standout center fielder for the University of California in San Diego baseball team.  He is the captain of the baseball team…and now, he is a brain tumor patient.  As he leads his team into the NCAA finals, this young man inspires his team, his coach, and his entire community with an unwavering “Ya Gotta Believe” spirit.

Each year, the Tug McGraw Foundation receives hundreds of letters from patients describing their gratitude for the person who has helped care for them. Our Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life for brain tumor patients and caregivers. Annually, we present three awards; this year, we are adding a fourth - Caregiver of the Year.

May 3, 2007 – Distress Levels and Cancer-Related Items of Concern in Brain Tumor Population

Distress is a major concern for cancer patients. Patients with brain tumors are particularly at risk for elevated levels of stress because of the severe functional, cognitive and neuropsychological symptoms of the disease. A study at the Tug McGraw Center at Duke is working to identify the extent and causes of this kind of distress.

HOUSTON, TX – The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is preparing to lead a consortium of researchers from across the globe in the largest genetic study ever conducted on the causes and risk factors of adult and pediatric gliomas, or malignant primary brain tumors, with an $11 million award from the National Cancer Institute.

September 19, 2006 – NIH to Map Genomic Changes of Lung, Brain, and Ovarian Cancers

These first three cancers will be studied in the pilot phase of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project. Scientists hope to determine the possibility of developing a useful atlas of the changes in the human genetic blueprint of all cancers through their study.
